A "Match" Made Online.

Before meeting Mr. Ly, I was a serial dater.  Mostly in my mid-twenties, I was living in NYC and dating everyone and anyone.  Now, don't get the wrong idea about me, I really was just dating.  I thought of it as a fun social experiment, and blogged like mad about the crazy dates I went on.  I wasn't looking for a life partner, I was looking for entertainment, and a big city like that is chock-full of entertaining dating partners. I met guys all over - on the subway, bars, online, I even tried speed dating.  Seriously, all I did was date. Once I moved back to the Philly burbs, the bars didn't seem like a good place to meet someone anymore, clubs are not my scene, and I work in an environment that is about 99% women. I shop online, job hunt online, why not find a boyfriend online, too?

All that dating in my twenties doesn't mean I didn't have my fair share of heart-break and disappointment before Mr. Ly.  He is my third serious relationship in my lifetime (serious to me constitutes a relationship where I actually saw a future leading to marriage with that person, at some point in the relationship.) I was about a year out of my last serious relationship and finishing up a year of not-so-serious dating online.

I really was ready to call it quits with the online scene for a while and look into other avenues of meeting people, when a younger guy who lived close by, winked at me. I was in the phase of "I should choose the people I date" and only respond to people I contacted first. Also, I didn't want to date someone younger than me (I had a lot of these "rules" when I was dating), but I only had a few weeks left. Live it up, it's only a date - I thought.  I checked out his profile, thought he was cute and geeky (which is 100% my type), and I liked what he had to say.

This was Mr. Ly's dating profile pic, him with Wil Wheaton at a video game conference. Did I mention he was geeky?

I skipped winking back, and just emailed him.  We exchanged about a week of emails, a few text messages, and one phone call before meeting up for our first date in April 2010.  We went to dinner and a movie, yet the most memorable aspect of that night for me was how easy it was to talk to him. Also, I was amazed at how closely our lives were intertwined, yet obviously had never crossed paths.  At the time, I was teaching at his old middle school, working with a lot of his old teachers - some of whom his family still spoke to, and I had just met his sister's best friend the day before he winked at me online (of course we had been lamenting the losers we were dating lately!)  The night ended 5 hours after the date began, and I left feeling hopeful for future dates.

He followed up with a text the next day, we had our second date 3 nights after our first, and more importantly, our first kiss. Our 3rd date came only 3 days after that, and  within one week, we had been on 3 dates, shared some very sweet goodnight kisses, and knew we had started something pretty special.

A little on Mr. Ly's love life prior to meeting me: Mr. Ly had just delved into the world of dating the week we met.  After a lifetime of being single, and really having only a few short relationships to speak of, he was ready to try his hand at dating.  Turns out he wasted a 6 month membership on the dating site. My last online date was also his first (and LAST) online date ever!

Early on in the relationship,  we would stay up so late just talking and enjoying getting to know each other.  Nothing was rushed, everything happened at such a natural pace, it was like it was always meant to be. I continued blogging through the first three months of our relationship, and I love going back and reading how happy I was right from the start.

I'm so glad that he winked, and that I gave a younger guy a chance that I wouldn't have initially given any thought to dating, because he is the best person I've ever met, and I'm SO lucky he chose me to match with.

On our 1st Valentine's Day, I made him his own infini-tee to match the one  in his profile pic!

Has anyone else ended up marrying someone that they might have written off otherwise because of a silly hang-up like age?
